The theme we chose for this gallery is surrealism. Surrealism is more than an artistic style, it's more of an artistic movement. Artists that create surreal art often try to explore the unconscious mind as a way of creating art, resulting in dreamlike, sometimes bizarre imagery across endless mediums. The core of Surrealism is a focus on illustrating the mind’s deepest thoughts automatically when they surface. The Surrealist movement initially surfaced in 1924 when French poet André Breton published his “Manifesto of Surrealism,” influenced by the theories and writings on the unconscious mind by psychologist Sigmund Freud, the groundbreaking studies of Karl Jung, and the early 20th-century Dada movement. The vision of our gallery was to encompass some of  the most prominent surrealism artists. We featured art from the beautiful minds of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, and Leonora Carrington. Each one of these artists brings their own style to our gallery as well as a unique point of view.

Leonora Carrington

To start, Salvador Dali applied the concept of surrealism to all aspects of his life. He was rebellious toward art and politics and he expressed this through his art.

Next, Frida Kahlo fit into our art gallery very well because of her use of symbolism. She often includes animals or iconography to represent emotions. She paints herself because she can project her her anguish and pain onto canvas. She had polio, multiple spine surgeries, miscarriages and an addiction to pain medication. The only way she could express all the suffering she felt was to paint.

After that we chose Max Ernst, one of the founders of the surrealism movement and one of the original pioneers of the Dada movement. To stimulate the flow of imagery from his unconscious mind, Ernst began in 1925 to use the techniques of frottage (pencil rubbings of such things as wood grain, fabric, or leaves) and decalcomania (the technique of transferring paint from one surface to another by pressing the two surfaces together).

Pablo Picasso is one of the most well known artists to exist and his work is beautiful. His goal was to create art as beautiful as the chance encounter. He applied the concept of surrealism to most of his work and created true masterpieces.

Finally is Leonora Carrington. Her art is spectacular and was an easy addition to our gallery. She had a short-lived romance with older German painter Max Ernst. Throughout her life, she refused to explain her work and she disliked any attempt to decipher her visuals. In seeing beyond the visible world, beyond the rational or comprehensible, Carrington leaves us only with abstract terms like “magic.”
